MATUSE WORLD VIEW

We continue Matuse's story here, that of art plus function, of design, of education, and a commitment to R&D (read part one here).

What do you hope someone feels when they encounter the brand for the first time?

I hope their first reaction is that Matuse feels different from what they expect a wetsuit brand to be. I want them to sense that there is real thought behind everything we do, from the materials we choose to the smallest design detail.

Matuse has always existed at the intersection of art and function, so I hope people feel both: an emotional connection to the brand and confidence in the product. I want them to recognize that we respect their intelligence and are inviting them to look deeper, to understand why materials matter, why longevity matters, and why a wetsuit can be more than just another piece of equipment.

Ultimately, I hope they feel inspired to experience the ocean differently and believe they have discovered something original, purposeful, and made to last.

How does Matuse look at the world?

Matuse sees the world as an ongoing opportunity to do better. We are not chasing a finish line; we are committed to the pursuit. Every product is a step in that direction. We constantly ask questions, find better materials, and refine the small details that add up. Our worldview is that art and function belong together, and longevity is the most sustainable philosophy. Ichiban is not a trophy we claim; it is a standard we pursue, a reminder to stay curious, keep learning, and never settle. That pursuit is the heart of Matuse.

Can you tell us what the Matuse logo means?

Our logo is based on Hexagram 12 of the ancient I Ching, a symbol depicting Heaven and Earth moving apart. Traditionally, it represents a period of imbalance, when connection is lost, progress is obstructed, and the world is not as it should be.

We chose it because that condition is deeply human. Regardless of who we are or where we come from, we all recognize that we are imperfect. We all want to improve, grow, and become better versions of ourselves.

The circle surrounding the symbol completes its meaning for us. It reminds us that perfection is never a final destination. There will always be distance between who we are and who we hope to become, and that is precisely the point. The value lies in the pursuit, the progress, and the journey itself.

Fun fact: The Matuse logo was my first tattoo at age 16. Sorry, Mom.

How does Matuse view sustainability?

Sustainability starts at the design table. If we cannot stand behind repairing a product, then it is not finished. Innovation has to be repairable; otherwise, it is just a gimmick.
