All surf missions should be taken seriously and when you need to operate in stealth, look no further. The Tactical was originally designed for Seal Team 6 for low thermal registration aka now you see me, now you don't. This all-black suit ultimately caught the eye of surfers looking for an understated wetsuit. The Tactical back zip epitomizes Matuse’s art + function philosophy aka build the best possible products, and design them to look good, even if you can’t see it coming.

The Tactical with Geoflex follows Matuse’s mantra of making products Ichiban (the best) by looking forward, developing materials and construction in the most sustainable ways.

Matuse’s Geoflex Limestone Rubber is made with Eco Carbon Black additive recycled from post-consumer scrap tires in combination with water-based adhesives for fabric lamination, instead of conventional solvent-based glues. This eliminates Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and maintains bonding strength aka the durability you expect from Matuse.

We skip traditional dyeing processes, opting for dope-dyeing yarn to add color before yarn extrusion to save energy and water. To minimize waste, all of our trimmed edges from cutting wetsuit patterns are reused to produce more Geoflex sheets that make our Matuse products.

The Tactical with Geoflex is fair-trade certified and is the next generation of responsible building that doesn’t sacrifice on the performance you expect.

Hydrasilk: Minimizes water adsorption and maintains your suit’s overall shape memory, adding to its longevity. Hydrasilk is buttery-soft and located inside and outside of your suit, aka you won't want to take it off.
Internal Farmer John Floodgate: Minimizes water entry on zipper opening side.
Durasoft Nylon Taping: Applied to the inside seams and is soft to the skin, for extra comfort, durability, and warmth.
• YKK Vislon Zipper: Large #10V size zipper for ease of closure and prevention of salt corrosion.
• 360 Degree Hydrasilk Neckline: Velcro plush is set back from the top edge of the neckline and creates a 360-degree seal against water entry and adds Hydrasilk comfort against the skin.
• Easy access external key pouch: With elastic cord on side of hip / you don't have to take your suit off to access a key or other items stored while surfing.
Fair-Trade Certified Construction -
• Water based adhesives: Used for laminating our Hydrasilk Nylon instead of conventional solvent-based glues and minimizes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s).
• Eco Carbon Black: A recycled additive from post-consumer scrap tires that improves suit durability.
• Dope-dyeing yarn process: We add color to our Nylon before yarn extrusion, skipping traditional dying processes to save on energy and water.
• Recycled Trims: All trim from cutting patterns is reused to create more Geoflex sheets, to build more Matuse suits aka we make no waste.

TACTICAL 4/3MM BACK-ZIP

No volveré a comprar.

Muchas gracias.

A neat addition to the wetsuit collection

I have slightly creaky shoulders, so while I have chest zips, a couple of hooded wetsuits (thank you, Matuse) and even a couple of no-zips, a Matuse Dojo Open Water 4.5/2/1.5 backzip has been great for winter swims and the Tactical 4/3 Back-Zip seemed a good backup for situations where a delicate outer layer might get damaged. Boards, bodysurfing.

The Tactical design has some typical Matuse features, notably a smooth interior fabric, making getting the suit on and off easier and perhaps providing better, lighter insulation than fuzzy carpeting. There's only a few slippery-inside brands of surfing wetsuits, none of them significant clothing sellers.

The Tactical is the only back-zip I've encountered with the "farmer John floodgate", very like traditional coveralls, so you need to fit between the top and bottom, then get the shoulders under the wide straps. On first try, getting into the floodgate is trickier than with an unprotected back zip or even one with a back water barrier, or a back barrier with a hole at the top for your head. I expect it to work well with a little practice. The Dojo, by comparison, just has a 2 inch neoprene strip inside the zipper to discourage water entry. Triathletes in a hurry.

Build quality, with tidy curving taping on the inside, looks very good. It's August and I'm in Florida, so it'll take a trip north, or to California, or a wait until January to try it in the water.

The Tactical shoulder patch is a mystery. The neck/zipper/velcro-type flap area looks more complex than it is. The Farmer John bib seems to be made of its own special thin neoprene material. Hydrasilk is nice. How about a general-purpose jacket that you can wear with nothing under it on rainy days?

Good, light and warm

My tactical 4.3 is pretty good overall. Geoflex material is well-made, the design provides a balance of flexibility/warmth, feels like it's a 9.5/10 and I plan to buy the spring version next year.
