WHAT IS GEOPRENE?
Not all wetsuit rubber is created equal. To understand why Geoprene is a step forward, it helps to know where wetsuit materials started.
THE BIRTH OF NEOPRENE
Neoprene was invented in the 1930s as one of the first synthetic foamed rubbers. Chemically, it's polychloroprene: an elastomer made by linking together chains of a clear liquid called chloroprene.
It was a breakthrough material, and it became the standard for wetsuits around the world. The problem is that traditional neoprene wetsuits are made from petroleum-derived chloroprene, so every suit begins with oil extraction and refining.
On top of that, neoprene suits are not designed with longevity and durability in mind. And, they're likely to end up in the landfill quicker than you'd like.
ENTER GEOPRENE: THE NEXT GENERATION OF NEOPRENE-FREE WETSUITS
Geoprene, from Yamamoto Corporation, is Matuse's answer to both these problems. We introduced it to the surf world in 2006, and it has been at the heart of our production ever since.
Instead of petroleum, Geoprene is derived from limestone that is 99.7% pure calcium carbonate. Its completely closed-cell structure makes it 98% water impermeable, compared with roughly 65% for petroleum-based neoprene.
What makes Geoprene unique to Matuse is our titanium-alloy coating. This layer reflects your body heat back toward you, so a Geoprene wetsuit stays warmer than other limestone neoprene suits of the same thickness. No other brand's suits have it.
The result: a wetsuit that is warmer, lighter, faster drying, longer lasting, and kinder to the ocean you surf in aka Ichiban infused.
