39F water, 19F air, with howling offshores and fresh snowfall. I followed a city snowplow on the graveyard shift to the pointbreak. Salt water frozen on the rocks. Took one glance, saw an overhead bomb rumble down the coast - it was firing! We couldn't wait, my buddy and I jumped in the dark. By sunrise the bluff was lined with surfers checking, many people I spoke with thought it was too cold, even dangerous to go out. With the limestone-based rubber, I felt incredibly lightweight instead of waterlogged and heavy. By 9am, the shift change had already happened, guys were lasting only an hour or two at best. At 3.5 hours the tide had filled in and I caught enough waves. I could easily have stayed out longer, barely a chill. By the time I got back to my car, my beard was frozen solid. Stoked.
