Wore these trunks for 6 days in Mexico, rinsing with freshwater at least once throughout the day (never entered a washing machine or dryer). The fit and pattern of these shorts is near PERFECT for surfing. Movement is completely uninhibited by the way the waist locks in and allows your hips and legs to be unrestricted. I assume these are Nylon Elastane as they do not soak up nearly as much water as other shorts leaving you light and fast in the water just like the closed cell neoprene. Their quick drying ability is also superior to other shorts.
One thing I did not understand upon receiving these shorts was the need for a running gusset along the inseam with a turned overlock stitch of sorts. There are still rub points created by this that I personally would have liked to see a pattern which wraps the inner thigh with a higher consumption and price. I would happily pay for that. To this point though and to be fair, I really haven't had too much of an issue here yet.
Unfortunately... The bottom edge hem (which is bonded) is unfortunately coming undone already, way too soon. Clearly this is a spot that I am grateful for bonding but I wish this wasn't the case as I doubt these will not make it through summer. It is important to me that these shorts perform but more important they last a long time. These are replacing a pair of Patagonia shorts which I bought about 8 years ago, I have repaired the pocket lining on those and will most likely be back in those if these undo.
Overall I am happy I bought these shorts (unless they really start to degrade more). I respect the brand in full and understand decisions made on certain aspects of this product come with consideration I am not fully privy to but am sure they exist. I do feel that these should result in 3 stars with the way the bottom bonding is undone but I cannot deny how perfect the fabrication and pattern are. For that I am giving them 4 as I love the care Matuse puts into their product and wanted to provide feedback.
