Jamie Sterling is perpetually planning his next surfing challenge. And in his world “challenge” means hurling himself into 25-50 foot surf. Tahiti, Indo, Australia, Tasmania, South Africa, Thailand, Puerto Escondido, Easter Island, Chile, Mexico, Hawaii, France, California, Peru, Samoa. Jamie stays in close contact with swell forecasts and probably has his travel agent on speed dial (he also helps run this program while at home: www.professionalsurfguide.com).
Whether he’s managing his chaotic calendar or executing his disciplined training regimen, Jamie’s approach is that of a professional. The 2006 XXL Big Wave Performer of the Year, Jamie has been a longtime member of the charging elite. A Haleiwa local and Pipeline mainstay, Sterling recounts his first experiences rushing Pipe: “I started sitting on the shoulder with Kalani Chapman, Jamie O’Brien, J-Fred, and Mark Healey in 1993 just watching Derek Ho, Shawn Briley, and Mike Stewart do their thing. Derek Ho called me into my first wave and I got barreled. Went to school the next day and had bragging rights.”
Year after year, Jamie builds upon his track record with
influential rides. His highlight reel is so lengthy that it is
often hard to believe that Jamie’s not even 29. The God-
father of Mikala Jones’ daughter, Jamie has been part of
the Matuse Family since the beginning.
